Anticipating our next book
Statement #1 is something I strongly agree with. At one point in everyone's life, a person should want to achieve something great. My dream is to be in the MLB and become the greatest baseball player in the history of baseball. I have the ambition to accomplish my goals. I put in a lot of work and making extra time to do drills. If one day I fail to accomplish my biggest goal, that doesn't mean I have to give up because I know something better will come in life.
Statement #7 is something I strongly agree with. Going through sorrow is something that will happen one day in life. Death in my family helped me become stronger and made me closer to my family. The experience also helped me mature and understand somethings can't be prevented.

Hits and Misses
I have struggled with many writings and have been successful in many writings. The writing I struggled with the most was my Nelson Mandela paper. The big mistakes in the paper were grammar and formatting. After receiving my grade, I looked and focused on how I can correct my mistakes. I used my mistakes to make something better out of it. This paper made me better at my blogs and my reading responses.
The most successful paper I wrote was the LOTF paper because I wrote about my feelings and felt comfortable about my argument. My formatting was well. I went to the Writing Center and Dr. D for help several times. I allowed the Writing fellows to check my information about the book and proofread. From this paper, I have grown on my vocabulary skills and improved my writing. I also grew on a little of my grammar. By writing this paper, I gained more confidence on my opinion.

Strategies for Purple Hibiscus
The strageties I use for Purple Hibiscus is to annotate and paying attention to Kambili's feelings about each character. Kambili uses her feelings to give you the understanding of the different characters and how to interpret them throughout the book. Her feelings also gives a full understanding of herself and how she wants to handle the situation. Annotating different quotes is a great way to get more understanding from the book because you can underline the key events in Nigeria and moments in Nsukka.
The most effective for me right now is annotating because I do it a lot and right my feelings on the side of the pages. The challenges I have is learning about the military dictatorship and how to understand what their plans to do in Nigeria. I'm solving this problem by looking more in the book about how they are affecting the community.I also need to be more observant about life in Aunty Ifeoma's house. I hope my strategies help me and my classmates get a better understanding for the test and receive good grades.

New York Times Prompt
Since my high school days begun,my childhood memories started to fade away,so I'm going to tell you about my childhood memories. My most precious childhood possession is my turtle. Ever since I was 4 years old, he has been with me and has become a part of my family. He is cool and is a the only friend I can't talk to. While he was sleep or just running around, I watched my favorite shows such Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Cory in the House, Spongebob Squarepants, and Zoey 101. All the shows were funny and they were the reason I watched Disney and Nick. Other shows I seemed embarrassed to watch was That's So Raven and the Powerpuff Girls. I also wish I could remember my days in t-ball and getting my dog because that was the start of my baseball career and my new stage of life.
My favorite picture books were One Fish,Two Fish and I Survived books. Sometimes I felt like a creator of different things, so I created homemade birthday cards, pictures, and paper airplanes for our family. I usually made them at my old school in Jackson, Mississippi. After school, I played with toys such as wrestlers and army men I used to carry around all the time when I would visit people or going on a road trip. The objects that tells a story about my life is a baseball and a football because that's the sports I played all the time and I sometimes felt like a famous star and was the best person on the team. My best sleepover moments I had was when we played baseball at night and played "Dark". The most memorable things I got in the mail was money. I don't have a nickname because Kolin is a great name already.

Political Article
In the article, former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been unemployed in the NFL. The NFL owners will not hire him because they want to avoid hearing Trump's anger about the situation on his Twitter account. Last season, Kaepernick kneeled during the National Anthem because the anthem didn't equal up to what is currently happening in America. In the article, it states that "critics decried his actions unpatriotic and disrespectful to military service members and the American flag".
I don't believe the NFL owners are afraid of Trump and his Twitter account. The NFL doesn't want to deal with the hatred from the fans and will affect their team's status. Colin Kapernick's purpose of kneeling was to take a stand to stop police brutality and have equal opportunities for minorities. I agree with Kaepernick on this issue in America and how we need to stop police brutality in America.
I felt like this was a good topic for me because I knew the main purpose of him kneeling, but I don't understand how his action to take a stand against a major problem in America led him to unemployment. His actions to me was brave and he did receive a lot of criticism. I also wondered how the president's Twitter account and NFL owners being afraid of his opinion can affects someone's career and passion for the sport. Colin Kaepernick is an free agent mainly because of his opinion about the big problem in America that will never stop.

The Last Quarter
I learned that I'm a pretty good writer. I'm pretty good at writing down my feelings and what I do in a teenage point of view. I can work on expanding my vocabulary. As a student, I've improved a lot. I stay on schedule with my work and confident enough to ask my teacher for help. I learn best when we play review games about the topic, draw pictures, and doing note-cards.
I'll use my tactics to get a better understanding of the unit and stop getting B's in the class. I want to make an A to end my freshmen year. It will also make me more productive in class and improve my vocabulary. I will make the 4th quarter the best quarter to in my freshmen year.

Best Weekend Ever
This weekend was great. On Thursday, I left in the middle of Launch Fest to go to Monroe for the State Powerlifting Meet. We went to the hotel to put our bags in our room and go to weigh-ins. It took an hour to call our school and turned out I weighed 106.8 pounds, 9 pounds more than last summer. Then we went back to the hotel and ate pizza. I only ate 2 slices of pizza. I went to sleep.
At 3:00 p.m. ,the next day, it was time to compete. I squatted 195 pounds. I benched 85 pounds. And then it came to deadlift. I was in 4th place the whole meet. I was losing by 55 pounds. The lifter in 3rd dead-lifted 235 pounds. I had to deadlift 290 pounds in order to beat him and place 3rd to break the school record in my weight class by 5 pounds. I lifted it and tied him at a total of 565 pounds. Then to break the tie they looked at the weighs of both of us and I weighed the lightest. I won 3rd in the state with the school record for deadlift in my weight class, too. This is the biggest accomplishment in my life because I can say I'm top 3 in the state in powerlifting..

Last Week
Last week was one of the busiest weeks of my life. I had a bunch of history assignments I had to do.My Spanish teacher gave me 8 assignments in the span of 2 days. I had vocabulary and reading time and I had 3 test. I had baseball practice and games. I also didn't get enough sleep.
So this week is going to be great because I'm going to a friend's house. I'm going to get more sleep and I'm going to parades that involves a lot of candy. I'm going to the batting cage and practice on my outfield drills to improve my game. If I don't do those things, the basketball court is right down the street plus I have a weight set in my garage. My break is completely scheduled.

Analyze the Song
In "Umbrella"by Rihanna, she uses a lot of literary devices that involves sound patterns and rhymes. In stanza 3, she uses assonance when she uses "higher, weather, better". She uses metaphor when she says "cause in the dark, you can't see shiny cars". The use of consonance in the song, too. The use of repetition is used when she says "you can stand under my umbrella".
The techniques contributed to the effect of the song by making it a love song that shows simile and repetition. The tone is an excited, emotional voice. The theme of the song is to stay together even if there is hardships during the way. The purpose of this song is to love each other and stay with each other.

poem
Food is like the feeling when you hit a walk off homerun,
The crunching noises of chips when your teeth crush them into little pieces.'
Food dances when it sees my face,
food is the reason one of the most important things in the human race.
My stomach begins to roar when they see the tastiness of food,
my stomach cries when there is no more.
Sometimes, I dream of food like I dream of going to the Baseball Hall of Fame,
sometimes I think it will take a long time for me to eat.
But that's ok,
because I will treat food like my best friend.

Vocabulary
Tom was about to buy cookies at the store. After she put the cookies in the bag, the cashier patronizes him. Tom went to the manager's office to report the lady and it turned out the lady was fired. The manager speculated the man did something else to the cashier while the altercation occurred. He went to the video cameras and found Tom threw the cookies and and also censured her because of her slow way to put the cookies in the bag. The manager thought of a good way to get Tom back.
The manager called the cashier back and told her that she got her job back and was inducted to assistant manager. She asked her to get the cookies and asked him to come back. She apologized and she said he could have the cookies for free. She put the cookies in the bag faster and said have a nice day. Then he got arrested for "stealing the cookies".

Research
The two things I learned about Nelson Mandela and the apartheid was that the separation of racial societies in South Africa resulted in police brutality and the imprisonment that lasted 27 years. In June of 1976, a group of schoolchildren were protesting, which
resulted in the many deaths. The government also placed blacks outside of South Africa to separate them from the white society. The apartheid resulted in hundreds of deaths and multiple protest that lead blacks to jail.
I have a few problems that seems to me that affects my paper. It seems my paper could be more in depth with woman rights and education for blacks. I think I need to learn more on embedding quotations because I am going to include more quotes stated by Mandela. I also have problems with repeating the same information and how bad inequality was in South Africa.

Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian: Entry 2
In ATDOAPTI, Arnold has moved to a different school named Reardan. He describes this school as "racist", stated on page 56. As an opportunity to become the first person from the rez to go to college, he deals with different task such as getting a fight with Roger and racial jokes from classmates that includes "chief and red-skin", stated on page 63. I feel bad for him because he dealt with those comments most of the time at Reardan. He beats up Roger because of the racial comments he said towards Indians and blacks. He beats him up with one punch and shocks his classmates. It seems he gained more confidence and physical contact because of his close friend, Rowdy.
He also explains his way to get to school such as hitchhiking. He is Dad's car breaking down and/or not getting picked up from home to go to school. I feel bad because he has a difficult way to get to school and has parents that don't have a great amount of money to feed him and themselves. He also have weird conversations with people at his school. I notice he uses a lot of harsh language and sexual comments throughout his diary.

Last Week
I had a very busy week last week. I had about 3 quizzes and a huge test that I was very nervous about. Baseball practice is where I have fun most of the time because I go home and start on my homework. Especially the 3-4 page outline that had to be singled-spaced. I had to find more sources because I didn't have a good amount of sources to make 3-4 pages. I worked on that assignment all week and then guess what? I have a rough draft due by Wednesday. Then I have Vocabulary.com and I had to study for my Spanish and Science quiz that I passed. I had a shadow from Northwestern Middle School named Ryan Armwood. He was cool and he seemed to like the school.
As soon as school was over, I had power lifting, which is fun because I love to lift weights. After that, I went home and jumped in my bed like a frog. It was soft and comfortable, which made my whole Friday. I woke up Saturday to workout again with my parents and worked on my squat, bench, and core work. I cleaned up the house after and rested for baseball practice. It was hot and the game lasted for and hour and thirty minutes. We have PFPs, which means you cover the base as a pitcher. That was fun and then I had mini-pen. And then today, I'm at the library at the moment to get books for my rough draft. It sounds lame, but it's fun because its about Nelson Mandela and the apartheid!

Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
In "Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian", Arnold tells us about himself and his families' life. He explains his condition that left him," nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other.....seizures....headaches",stated on pg. 4. He also explains the harsh reservation he lives at with his poor family, which makes me sad and fortunate of what I have today. He is bullied a lot because of his condition. As a way to forget the negative actions that he has experienced, he draws as a way to express himself and feels comfortable in the world. I can relate because we express are feelings through writing. He also explains his best friend, his dog Oscar, getting killed by his father because he became very ill. Arnold seems to bring a depressing voice to the story as I read the story.
Arnold also brings a sense of humor to his diary as he expresses inappropriate jokes and different stories about his friend Rowdy. He explains Rowdy as a," big, goofy dreamer" as he reads silly books and laughs to them a lot. He also talks about his teacher Mr.P, who has a huge nose and about as short as me. He throws a book at Mr.P, who seems to me as a teacher with a low intelligence level. After, Mr.P explains that they were trying to get the," Indian out of them", on pg. 35. This set a spark to me that Mr. P didn't want the kids to know about their harsh reality. and became more intelligent students

Nelson Mandela
My topic is about the apartheid and what the challenges he faced to abolish it (research question). For background information, Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a human rights activist who went through
hardships, such as racial discrimination and adversity to give blacks the same
rights like whites. He also had a historical imprisonment that last up to 27 years. The apartheid, a form of racial discrimination and segregation {similar to Jim Crow laws}, divided the racial classes. The whites had an area that separated themselves from the black society, which was poverty and breakdowns. Protest broke out daily that took a lot of lives and forced the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela. My topi is important because our society seem to remember Jim Crow laws in America, but another type of discrimination was involved in Africa. The apartheid in Africa happened around Jim Crow laws. This topic matters because it shows how racial comments and inequality hurts blacks, that seem to be only cared by us.
Last Semester
Last semester was challenging for me since it was the beginning of high school. I realized that my performance in the classroom can improve if I review the topics I learned for the day and receive more practice. My writing seem to improve a lot, but still not at the highest level I want it to be at the moment. I also recognized that my bad habits seem to appear constantly. I am working on progressing on my habits since it doesn't help me at all in the classroom.
Good news is that I'm starting to break my bad habits by doing them constantly doing them, which it was a challenge because I've been doing for years. My mom recently gave me a book that helped break the bad habits and create new habits to become a better, well-organized person with great habits. I currently got A's and B's. I'm used to the feel of high school that makes feel better and more confident about myself and my schoolwork to make better grades.

Free Post
My weekend was a usual thing for me. Friday I had pitching for Coach T and I was really nervous. The reason was because he said you had to pitch 60% or you most likely was not going to pitch. I did good but still didn't know my percentage. After the pitching session, I had to run because I had to make powerlifting practice. When I got there, they were done. I asked Coach Conor can i lift, but he said he had to go to the airport. My Friday was technically over because I couldn't go to the Lee basketball game, which we lost.
I woke up Saturday to lift weights, which was so painful. I then went to baseball for outfield group and I hit in the cage at Traction. Baseball was off Sunday, but we had practice Monday. I had a hitting lesson with Coach Tom scheduled, but Coach told me I had to go to the first outfield group because Howell got stuck at the airport. Then I had to get ground balls for infield and then pitch to work on my slider. After, I hit in the cage and went home to study for 3 quizzes for today and notecards for World History.

Research Paper
The
research project is going well so far. My paper is going well at understanding
the information about the apartheid and the treatment of blacks in South Africa.
My paper is also successful at the life of Mandela and how he went through. The
paper is also going well on the white South Africans’ government plans and expectations to
separate races.
Some of the project is not going the
way I planned. I wanted to do a biography on Nelson Mandela, but seem to get
mixed up on my topic sometimes. I am failing to get more specific information on
the ANC and the other anti-apartheid organization.I'll continue to do research and figure out the problem as I continue with my paper, but I need to figure the problem out quickly.
